Sky News Investigation: HIV Healing Church

Yesterday at the DigiManc conference, the subject of the church advertising that people with HIV can be healed was discussed in a Q&A session.

I saw the coverage of the HIV healing church aka the Synagoge Church of All Nations, based in London. I was put in the interesting position today of commenting on the Sky investigation and whilst the media coverage was less than flattering, when I looked at what the people had been saying at the church, none of them promised a miracle.

The important thing to remember is that this investigation was a ‘sting’ operation, whilst the church should not be saying ‘stop taking medication’ I have to acknowledge that possibly Sky went looking for something. I have asked Sky when I sent my feedback could we see the unedited footage made available, so we can see the full context.

I do worry however at the rise of faith healers within the Christian world, the documentary Derren Brown did about Miracles for Sale also highlights some of people who are in the Christian world to make a buck and not really see lives transformed through Jesus.

I did hear on the grapevine however, that this church (scoan.org) were and may be still are trying to launch a TV channel on skytv. I have a general rule that if you choose to stand up for something you have to be prepared to be shot down too.

Whether this is a media witch hunt, the church was careless in it’s wording or this was a money making scheme, there are some important things to remember about healing…

1) Miracles are an act of God, no man can heal you
2) Healing is a gift of grace, you cannot buy it or work for it
3) If your healing is genuine your doctor will tell you to stop taking medication.

I believe God heals today, but I also accept that people are exploiting others sickness. I don’t know the full facts only Sky and the church in question do, but we can all be informed of the full extent of what was said, if Sky News air the full footage.

I sent my feedback to Sky distancing myself from those pastors who tell people to stop taking medication after being prayed for, but I support those pastors who pray for those who are sick.

Two questions….

In the footage I didn’t see anyone suggesting people to stop taking medication, did you?
Scoan.org why doesn’t your pastor speak to Sky News so you can reply to the allegations their footage portrays?

DigiManc was fantastic

If you didn’t manage to get to DigiManc you missed a treat. The day was packed full of practical and diverse speakers from a variety of media backgrounds.

I would like to thank YouVersion, UCB and Tearfund for their support in helping us launch the Digi concept.

As a speaker I enjoyed the opportunity to share thoughts from a faith and media position at the same time.

I really enjoyed Wayne and Cherry’s sessions, I find that the best talks don’t answer your questions but suggest a different set of questions.

I started with the thought ‘why are we using social media?’ ‘what is it’s purpose?’ and that thought seemed to be expanded and developed throughout the day.

The key points I draw from DigiManc are

Be yourself, be authentic
Provide content of value
The value of content is set by your audience not you
Social Media is changing the way we listen and learn
Church must be at the forefront otherwise we will be left behind.

Loads of great feedback on twitter and looking forward to the next Digi events in 2012

The Brand Equation…Teaser for my talk at DigiManc

Everyone is doing it? I went to a church event where you were encouraged to Tweet whilst the message was being preached.

I like to think of myself as informed user of technology and social media, however I would not describe myself as a Techie.

The Tightrope Sessions…. Countdown to DigiManc Post 1

Well, this time next week we will be in full swing for the DigiManc event. I have decided to devote the next 7 posts to giving you a teaser of what will be discussed.

I am personally looking forward to listening to Cherry Hamilton and Wayne Clarke’s sessions. I am excited about the other sessions but these are the ones that tick my boxes.

Wayne works for the BBC and is also a Baptist Minister, I cannot imagine the tight rope he has to walk being involved in secular media and also maintaining his own beliefs. Without bigging Wayne up too much, Jesus faced the same dilemma, he had a constant following of people who Him to say more than he should and equally those who were waiting in the wings to pick up on a word which was out of place. Waynes talk is going to be very interesting.

I am also really intrigued to hear what Cherry Hamilton is going to say, her provocative title ‘Homophobic, money-grabbing hypocrites’ is something which really interests me, how do we deal with the Homosexuality issue without looking like red necks, why does the secular world thing we are focused on money and why do we say one thing and do another. A part of me thinks that these things may be true, a proportion of the church may be homophobic, money-grabbing hypocrites.

When I spoke to Cherry and she shared the theme of her talk, I replied by saying  “it sounds like a bit of a tightrope, one I will enjoy watching someone else walk”. My two top sessions will both be to some degree about tightropes.

Whats this church thing all about? Why bother?

Today I violated one of my rules of blogging. I posted something which was a little bit of a rant! I am in good company as rumour has it, Howard Conder also lost his usual cool temperament live on TV during The Late Show. I have just watched his public apology on Revelation TV and think he was bold, wise and godly to hold his hands up when he realised he stepped wrongly.

So as today closes in, I have had a few stresses this evening, earlier I was writing an email about some difficult matters and I think now maybe the tone of the email was a little harsh, so I have just fired off a second mail to apologise for the firsts brevity.

Information, Revelation, Following Jesus is really simple…but not easy.

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12

I love this verse. It’s a constant reminder to us that we do not know everything. The words of the Apostle Paul are so liberating. I have been really diving into some big questions of faith lately and one thing which does concern me is the drive towards the intellectualism invading our faith.

What Would Jesus Do Vs What Wouldn’t Jesus Do

Does everyone remember the WWJD craze that struck the earth?

Did you get your own wrist band when the What Would Jesus Do fad ran?

There was an important message behind that US and then Worldwide campaign trying to encourage people to consider their actions and whether they mirror Jesus’.

Can we really be objective…

If you have ever had to make a difficult decision, you’ll probably empathise with me on this post.

We have all been there when we have a major decision to make, decisions can be difficult, especially when you are trying to weigh up two equally exciting opportunities. I find that these are the hardest decisions because both seem good choices, but yet you need to think clearly about both options to make the best decision.

I started to consider how can we as human beings make an ‘objective’ decision. After much searching and researching online, I came to the conclusion that it is impossible to give an objective opinion or decision on anything, our individual subjectivity is the reason we cannot develop objectivity.

When faced with difficult choices, which can be good as well as bad, I find the following helps me…

- Which will I enjoy the most?

- Which is better for me?

- Which offers the best in the longer term?

- What is the best strategically for me?

- What impact will it have on other areas of my life?

Have you been faced with a difficult decision good or bad? Tell me how you made your choice…. Comment here
